Olivia Munn Reveals Breast Cancer Diagnosis and Decision to Undergo Hysterectomy

Actress and "X-Men" star Olivia Munn bravely disclosed her battle with breast cancer and the subsequent decision to undergo a hysterectomy in an emotional revelation made public on Mother's Day.

In an article featured in Vogue, Munn shared her journey, highlighting her choice for a hysterectomy as a means to avoid the draining effects of the estrogen-suppressing cancer drug Lupron. The 43-year-old actress, known for her roles in both film and television, explained that her decision was deeply rooted in her desire to prioritize her family, especially her 2-year-old son Malcolm, whom she shares with her husband, actor and comedian John Mulaney.

"It was a big decision to make, but it was the best decision for me because I needed to be present for my family," Munn expressed. "I had friends try to cheer me up by saying, 'Malcolm’s not going to remember this. Don’t worry.' But I just kept thinking to myself, 'I’m going to remember this, that I missed all these things.' It’s his childhood, but it’s my motherhood, and I don’t want to miss any of these parts if I don’t have to."

Munn initially revealed her breast cancer diagnosis via an Instagram post on March 14. Despite testing negative for various cancer genes, including BRCA, she found herself confronted with a challenging journey marked by four surgeries within a span of 10 months, including a double mastectomy.

The actress emphasized the importance of proactive measures for breast cancer detection, attributing her diagnosis to a "Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score" evaluation recommended by her obstetrician-gynecologist. The score prompted further screening, leading to the detection of Luminal B cancer, a fast-moving form of the disease.

Reflecting on her treatment, Munn detailed her struggles with the side effects of Lupron, which left her feeling profoundly fatigued. Ultimately, she opted for a hysterectomy, undergoing procedures to remove her uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries, thereby eliminating the possibility of future pregnancies.

However, prior to the hysterectomy, Munn and Mulaney had pursued egg retrieval, resulting in the creation of two healthy embryos. The news brought immense relief and joy to the couple, offering hope for expanding their family in the future.

Munn's journey through cancer has not only underscored her resilience but also highlighted the significance of accessible options for both treatment and family planning. Her openness about her experience serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of early detection and the value of support during challenging times.
