Campaign Launch by Doctor Against Addiction (DaAD): A Prescription for Deaddiction

In response to the alarming rise in various forms of addiction wreaking havoc on families and individuals, Doctor Against Addiction (DaAD) has initiated a bold campaign titled ‘A Prescription for Deaddiction’. The campaign aims to empower healthcare professionals to combat addiction at its roots, starting from the consultation room.

Dr. Manish Sharma, Chief Coordinator of DaAD, explains the essence of the campaign, stating, “At the core of our campaign lies the powerful symbol ‘HRx,’ representing a prescription for harm reduction. It signifies doctors' commitment to addressing the harm caused by addiction and harmful behaviors, serving as a beacon of hope and change. Through 'A Prescription for Deaddiction,' we envision a healthcare landscape where doctors champion change, armed with knowledge, compassion, and tools to tackle harmful behaviors.”

The campaign introduces the “HRx” symbol, enabling doctors to specify the addiction or harmful behavior they aim to address, thereby streamlining interventions.

The need for DaAD became evident in today's complex world, where individuals seek solace in various behaviors and substances, ranging from gadget addiction to drugs and tobacco. While these may offer temporary relief, they often result in significant harm to both individuals and society.

Dr. Chhavi Gupta, DM - Infectious Disease, Senior Consultant at Yashoda Super-specialty Hospital, Kaushambi, Ghaziabad, emphasizes the pivotal role of doctors in fostering trust and initiating conversations about addiction. “Trust is the cornerstone of any fruitful doctor-patient relationship. By creating an atmosphere of trust and non-judgment, healthcare professionals can empower patients to seek help for potentially harmful behaviors,” she explains.

The campaign emphasizes a personalized approach, tailoring interventions to individual patient needs and involving patients in setting deaddiction goals. Regular follow-ups and community support initiatives are integral to the process.

Dr. Narender Saini, Former General Secretary of the Indian Medical Association, highlights the holistic approach of ‘A Prescription for Deaddiction,’ addressing both physical and mental health implications of addiction. “Beyond physical harm, addiction can severely impact mental well-being, leading to anxiety, depression, and cognitive impairment. By approaching the conversation without judgment, healthcare professionals can make patients feel respected and understood,” he says.

Excessive behaviors, such as screen time and substance abuse, have immediate and tangible effects on physical health, underlining the urgency of moderation.

‘A Prescription for Deaddiction’ endeavors to tackle addiction comprehensively, eradicate stigmas, and integrate affected individuals back into mainstream society.
