Young Man's Life-Saving Tumor Surgery: A Medical Triumph

In a remarkable display of medical expertise and human resilience, doctors at HCG Manavata Cancer Centre (HCGMCC) successfully removed a challenging bilateral adrenal tumor from 21-year-old Mohammed Zaid. This complex surgery, lasting over six and a half hours, was crucial due to Zaid’s severe and uncontrolled hypertension caused by a condition called pheochromocytoma.

Zaid, from Malegaon, had been living with uncontrollable hypertension, making previous treatment attempts ineffective. His journey to recovery began when he sought help at HCGMCC. Under the leadership of Dr. Raj Nagarkar, the medical team took on the mission to save his life.

“When Mohammed Zaid came to us, his blood pressure was unmanageable despite medication. Tests at other institutions revealed a mass near his adrenal gland, leading to the diagnosis of pheochromocytoma. This tumor caused significant hormonal imbalances, affecting his blood pressure,” explained Dr. Raj Nagarkar, Managing Director and Chief of Surgical Oncology and Robotic Services at HCGMCC.

Zaid had undergone multiple unsuccessful medical interventions before arriving at HCGMCC, including chemoembolization and MIBG therapy. He even suffered a stroke and paralysis after one procedure.

“After reviewing his medical reports and consulting with our radiology team, we found the tumor was obstructing blood flow to vital organs. We decided to proceed with surgery despite the high risks, fully informing Zaid’s family,” added Dr. Nagarkar.

The dedicated surgical team, including Dr. Vikas Jain, Dr. Rajendra Dhondge, Dr. Owais Sayyed, Dr. Shaudharya V., Dr. Praveenkumar Surpur, and anaesthesia experts Dr. Nayana Kulkarni, Dr. Ravindra Tandale, and Dr. Jitendra Mahajan, along with intensivist Dr. Purva Magarkar, successfully performed the surgery.

Pheochromocytoma, a condition where a tumor around the adrenal gland disrupts hormonal balance, often causes uncontrolled hypertension, persistent headaches, and irregular heartbeats. The successful surgery at HCGMCC showcases the center’s advanced medical capabilities and compassionate care.

“Zaid’s blood pressure normalized immediately post-surgery, eliminating the need for further medication. He was transferred from the ICU to a regular ward within a day and began eating normally soon after. This successful surgery highlights our team’s skill and dedication to exceptional patient care,” concluded Dr. Nagarkar.

Zaid's story is one of hope and determination, emphasizing the significance of advanced medical interventions and the dedication of healthcare professionals in overcoming daunting medical challenges.
