World Hepatitis Day: "It's Time for Action"

World Hepatitis Day is dedicated to raising awareness about viral hepatitis, a severe inflammation of the liver that can lead to significant liver disease and cancer. This year's theme, "It's Time for Action," emphasizes the urgent need to enhance efforts in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of hepatitis to save lives and improve health outcomes.

Viral hepatitis comes in five main strains: A, B, C, D, and E. Among these, hepatitis B and C are the most prevalent, together accounting for 1.3 million deaths and 2.2 million new infections each year. Despite advances in diagnostic and treatment tools, and reductions in treatment costs, the global rates of testing and treatment have stagnated. However, with immediate and decisive action, the World Health Organization's goal to eliminate hepatitis by 2030 remains within reach.

One person dies every 30 seconds from a hepatitis-related illness, highlighting the critical need for accelerated action. Efforts must focus on increasing awareness, improving access to testing and treatment, and addressing barriers to care.

Stay tuned for the latest campaign materials, resources, and information on how you can contribute to the fight against hepatitis. By working together, we can make the elimination of hepatitis a reality.
