Health Advisory Issued for Spectators of Paris Olympics and Paralympics 2024

WHO/Europe, the French Ministry of Health and Prevention, Santé publique France, and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) have released a joint public health advisory to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of spectators attending the Paris Olympics and Paralympics 2024.

“The 2024 Summer Olympics, the largest sporting celebration, are a wonderful opportunity for people from all over the world to share the values of sports and to celebrate together. For the event to be a complete success, we wish people in attendance to prioritize their health. Along with WHO and ECDC, the French Ministry of Health, with the support of Santé publique France, have developed sound public health advice, with a few simple rules to follow in order to stay safe throughout the event. Take care and enjoy the Games!” said a spokesperson for the French Ministry of Health and Prevention.

The advisory covers various health-related topics, including recommended vaccinations for travelers, preventive measures against respiratory diseases and mosquito- and tick-borne illnesses, and tips on staying cool and hydrated in the expected high temperatures. Additionally, it provides information on sexual health, alcohol and tobacco use in France, and resources for medical assistance.

From July 26 to August 11, around 10,500 athletes representing 206 nations, including the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Refugee Olympic Team, will compete in the Olympic Games, which are expected to attract approximately 15 million visitors, including 2 million from abroad. Following this, from August 28 to September 8, the Paralympic Games will host over 4,000 athletes with disabilities competing in 549 medal events, drawing an estimated 3.4 million spectators.

“Being aware and vigilant about potential infectious disease risks can make a great difference in protecting ourselves and others, and to ensure that everyone attending the Summer Olympics and Paralympic Games stays safe and healthy,” said Pamela Rendi-Wagner, Director of ECDC.

Gundo Weiler, WHO/Europe’s acting Regional Emergency Director, emphasized the significance of health precautions during the Games. “The Olympics and Paralympic Games are time for celebration. They are also a powerful reminder of the importance of prioritizing our health. As millions of people come together in Paris for the world’s most famous sporting event, it is important to take simple yet powerful measures to prevent the spread of infectious diseases and protect ourselves from heat and other health risks. I encourage everyone to take advantage of the joint health advice for a secure, enjoyable experience.”

The health advisory aims to ensure that the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics are not only a celebration of athletic excellence but also a safe and healthy experience for all attendees.
