he American Oncology Institute Achieves Milestone with Successful Bloodless Bone Marrow Transplants

The American Oncology Institute (AOI) at Nangia Specialty Hospital in Nagpur has reached a significant milestone in cancer treatment with two consecutive successful bloodless autologous bone marrow transplants. These transplants, performed on a 58-year-old male from Amravati and a 57-year-old male from Madhya Pradesh, utilized the patients’ own cells to minimize the risk of infection and rejection.

Dr. Shailesh Bamborde, a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) specialist at AOI Nagpur, led the procedures, which focused on using autologous stem cells—cells taken from the patients themselves—to enhance the success rate of the transplants. This approach not only reduces the potential for complications but also improves patient outcomes.

The American Oncology Institute has made these advanced treatments more accessible and affordable, particularly for patients in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra and Central India. Harish Trivedi, CEO of CTSI - South Asia, praised AOI Nagpur’s efforts, noting, “AOI Nagpur’s achievement in bloodless bone marrow transplants marks a significant milestone in advancing healthcare accessibility in Central India. This innovation underscores their commitment to delivering high-quality care and reducing healthcare disparities in the region.”

Multiple Myeloma (MM), a prevalent type of blood cancer originating from plasma cells in the bone marrow, affects about 10-15 percent of blood cancer patients. It is characterized by symptoms such as renal failure, anemia, bone pain, infections, and fatigue. The bloodless transplant technique employed by AOI Nagpur offers renewed hope for effective treatment and improved quality of life for patients facing this challenging condition.

Dr. Amit Dhawan, Regional Chief Operating Officer of AOI Nagpur, highlighted the institution’s dedication to excellence in cancer care, stating, “AOI Nagpur is committed to providing world-class medical care with compassion and affordability. Our recent success in bloodless bone marrow transplants demonstrates our capability to deliver cutting-edge treatments locally, reducing the burden on patients and their families.”

Dr. Shailesh Bamborde emphasized the significance of the new procedure: “Treatment for multiple myeloma has advanced significantly in recent decades. Improved understanding of the disease has led to better diagnosis and treatment options. Our bloodless autologous transplant approach uses patients’ own stem cells to rejuvenate their marrow, minimizing risks and optimizing recovery. This method not only ensures safety but also enhances long-term outcomes for our patients.”

The BMT and Hematology Unit at AOI Nangia Specialty Hospital provides comprehensive care for a range of blood disorders and cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and various anemias. AOI’s multidisciplinary approach integrates medical oncology, hemato-oncology, radiation oncology, and surgical oncology services, adhering to international standards of cancer treatment.
