Major Update on Ayushman Arogya Mandirs: Expanding Access to Healthcare Across India
The Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs), previously known as Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centres, have seen significant growth and impact since their inception. As of July 31, 2024, a total of 1,73,881 AAMs have been established and are operational across India, providing a comprehensive range of healthcare services.
Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Anupriya Patel, highlighted this achievement in a recent Lok Sabha session, noting that these centers have collectively recorded over 317 crore footfalls. The extensive reach of AAMs underscores their critical role in delivering healthcare services to communities nationwide.
The initiative began in February 2018 with a goal to establish 1,50,000 AAMs by December 2022. This ambitious target has been surpassed, with AAMs now transforming existing Sub-Health Centres (SHCs) and Primary Health Centres (PHCs) into fully functional healthcare hubs. These centers offer a broad spectrum of services, including preventive, promotive, curative, palliative, and rehabilitative care, all provided universally and free of charge.
The AAMs have made a notable impact on public health, with significant numbers of screenings and consultations reported. To date, hypertension screenings have reached 84.28 crore, diabetes screenings 74.18 crore, and oral cancer screenings 49.88 crore. Additionally, breast cancer and cervical cancer screenings have been conducted for 22.87 crore and 15.13 crore individuals, respectively. Wellness sessions, including yoga, have been offered to 3.98 crore people, and teleconsultations have been conducted 26.39 crore times.
