Delhi Doctors Rally for Central Healthcare Protection Act, Urge Swift Implementation

After a brief one-week hiatus and renewed hope following an assurance from the Supreme Court, doctors affiliated with the Delhi Medical Association once again assembled at the historic Jantar Mantar, demanding the urgent implementation of the Central Healthcare Protection Act. This legislation is seen as crucial in preventing violence against healthcare professionals across the country.

Dr. Girish Tyagi, Registrar of the Delhi Medical Council, expressed disappointment over the Supreme Court's recent proceedings. "We had hoped that the Supreme Court would direct the Central government to implement the Central Healthcare Protection Act. However, the court did not address the need for a central act specifically," Dr. Tyagi remarked.

The Supreme Court has established a task force focused on improving working conditions and ensuring the safety of female doctors.
However, Dr. Tyagi pointed out that this initiative is limited to government hospitals, neglecting the violence that frequently occurs in private healthcare facilities. "We are calling for a comprehensive Central Healthcare Protection Act that would establish uniform rules regarding bailable and non-bailable offenses across India. Unfortunately, in many states, even the police and judiciary are unaware of the existing state laws meant to protect doctors," he added.

The protest at Jantar Mantar was not only a demonstration of the doctors' ongoing frustration but also an effort to raise public awareness about the critical issues faced by healthcare professionals. Dr. Tyagi emphasized, "We gathered today to continue our protest and to make the public aware that doctors should not be taken lightly. We will reconvene to discuss the next steps in our action plan."

As the demands for a Central Healthcare Protection Act grow louder, the healthcare community hopes that the government will recognize the urgency of the situation and take swift action to protect those on the frontlines of India's healthcare system.
