MTaI Chairman Applauds Government’s Move to Extend Health Coverage for Senior Citizens

The government’s decision to extend health coverage to all senior citizens aged 70 and above under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) has received widespread appreciation, with Mr. Pavan Choudary, Chairman of the Medical Technology Association of India (MTaI), hailing it as a landmark step toward providing equitable healthcare for India’s aging population.

Choudary highlighted how shifting family dynamics have contributed to a decline in the perceived value of elders in today’s society. “The utility of elders has diminished as the vast repository of knowledge they once carried is now just a Google search away. Furthermore, industrialization has pushed younger generations away from family professions, driving families toward nuclearization,” Choudary explained.

He also noted the rising costs of healthcare and caregiving, which have led many to view senior citizens as a financial burden. This is especially true for those in the "sandwich generation," who find themselves juggling the care of both their children and elderly parents. In light of these realities, Choudary applauded the government's decision to expand the Ayushman Bharat scheme, providing much-needed relief to families.

"MTaI has long advocated for the inclusion of all seniors aged 70 and above, regardless of income, under AB PM-JAY. We recognize this as a critical and compassionate step toward ensuring that our elderly population has access to the healthcare they need," Choudary remarked.

The extension of health coverage under AB PM-JAY is a vital move in addressing the unique healthcare needs of senior citizens, ensuring that they are not overlooked in a rapidly changing and increasingly mobile society.
