DMC Forms Panel to Probe Surge in Suicides in Medical Institutes

The recent suicides of two medical students at Delhi's Maulana Azad Medical College have sent shockwaves through the medical community and the general public. In response to these heartbreaking events, the Delhi Medical Council (DMC) has swiftly established a fact-finding committee to investigate the incidents and assess the broader challenges within medical institutions.

This move follows the tragic suicide of a postgraduate student at one of the country's most prestigious medical colleges, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

The panel, led by DMC President Dr. Arun Gupta, is composed of renowned medical professionals, including Dr. Prem Aggarwal, Dr. Ashwini Dalmiya, Dr. Manish Kumath, Dr. Anuj Mittal, and Dr. Girish Tyagi, who also serves as the DMC registrar.

The committee has been tasked with examining the specific circumstances surrounding these suicides, as well as identifying systemic issues within medical institutions that may be contributing to the rise in such incidents among students and healthcare professionals.

In an official statement, the DMC stressed that it has taken suo motu cognizance of the increasing suicides in medical colleges, expressing grave concern over the mental health crisis facing students and doctors. The council highlighted the disturbing trend of suicides in various medical institutes across the country.

As the committee commences its investigation, the medical fraternity is anxiously awaiting its findings, hoping they will lead to meaningful changes and solutions to prevent further tragedies.
