Medical Professionals Oppose LG's Bond Policy for MBBS and PG Courses

Renowned medical experts Dr. Radha Jain and Dr. Ajay Lekhi have expressed their vehement opposition to the recent decision by the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi to impose a one-year bond for students enrolled in MBBS and postgraduate (PG) medical courses. While supporters of the policy argue that it aligns Delhi’s medical seat allocation with other states, the two doctors contend that this move represents a regressive step that infringes upon personal freedoms and prolongs an already lengthy medical training period.

Dr. Radha Jain emphasized the need for a uniform "No Bond" policy throughout India, advocating for equal stipends to allow medical professionals to practice closer to their homes without added stress. She raised concerns that the bond policy not only increases infrastructure requirements but also isolates young doctors from their families, thereby exacerbating mental strain.

Echoing her sentiments, Dr. Ajay Lekhi highlighted the financial burden imposed by the bond, particularly for those who choose to opt out, facing potential costs of up to ₹15 lakh. He warned that many students would find this amount unaffordable, further jeopardizing their mental health and increasing the risk of suicide among medical trainees. Dr. Lekhi also pointed out that the policy could deter students from outside Delhi from pursuing residency in the capital, exacerbating the existing shortage of doctors in the country.

In light of these concerns, both Dr. Jain and Dr. Lekhi urged the government to engage with stakeholders, including the Indian Medical Association (IMA), before implementing such policies. They stressed the importance of protecting the future of young doctors and ensuring that the medical community remains robust and accessible.
