Celebrating Two Decades of Hearing Miracles: Sir Ganga Ram Hospital’s 19th Annual Cochlear Implant Event

On October 4, 2024, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) hosted its 19th Annual Cochlear Implant Event, titled ‘Two Decades of Hearing Miracle.’ Held from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm in the hospital’s auditorium, the event celebrated two decades of groundbreaking achievements in cochlear implantation, which have transformed countless lives.

With over 1.5 billion people worldwide affected by hearing loss, as reported by the World Health Organization (WHO), the significance of cochlear implant programs has been undeniable. SGRH had been at the forefront of this transformative technology in North India, launching its cochlear implant program back in 2001. Dr. A.K. Lahiri, Dr. Shalabh Sharma, and audiologist Mrs. Asha Agarwal led the initiative after receiving international training at the Bionics Institute in Australia. Since then, the team, alongside other skilled surgeons and the dedicated rehabilitation team at Asha Speech and Hearing Clinic, helped over 2,500 individuals regain their hearing.

The event highlighted the inspiring stories of these recipients, showcasing how cochlear implants had profoundly impacted their lives. Many went on to excel in academic, professional, and cultural spheres, achieving success as doctors, engineers, national-level athletes, TEDx speakers, and more. The event was a celebration of their achievements and a testament to how cochlear implants enabled them to live full, independent lives.

In a heartwarming display, several cochlear implant recipients performed on stage, demonstrating their talents and resilience in overcoming hearing challenges. The event also welcomed teachers from schools attended by implant recipients, offering them a deeper understanding of cochlear implant rehabilitation and how it could support students in the classroom.

The occasion was graced by Chief Guest Dr. Sharanjeet Kaur, Head and Chairperson of the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), along with distinguished Guests of Honour, Dr. (Prof.) D.S. Rana, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at SGRH, and Dr. Ajay Swaroop, Chairperson of the Board of Management at SGRH.

In addition to celebrating these remarkable achievements, the event introduced a new educational initiative—the ‘Cochlear Implant Habilitation – A Hybrid Course.’ This program aimed to enhance the skills of professionals in post-implant rehabilitation, ensuring even greater outcomes for future recipients.

Sir Ganga Ram Hospital’s continued leadership in hearing health and cochlear implant rehabilitation was evident throughout the event, which provided a platform for professionals, educators, and recipients to connect, share knowledge, and celebrate two decades of life-changing work in the field.
