Dental Implants: Revolutionising Dentistry, Says Prof. Mahesh Verma at GAAID Conference
Imagine a world where missing teeth can be replaced almost as naturally as the ones you were born with. This isn’t science fiction – it’s the reality dental implants are creating today. At the 6th Global American Academy of Implant Dentistry (GAAID) and 12th World Congress for Oral Implantology (WCOI) conference, Prof. Mahesh Verma, Vice Chancellor of Indraprastha University, shared how implants are transforming the field of dentistry.
Speaking with enthusiasm, Prof. Verma compared the impact of dental implants on dentistry to the life-changing power of angiography in cardiology. “Just as angiography reshaped how we understand heart health, implants have breathed new life into dental care, opening a fresh chapter for patients and professionals alike,” he shared. For him, this isn’t just a technological shift; it’s a movement that’s bringing a renewed sense of purpose to dentistry.
So, what makes dental implants so revolutionary? Prof. Verma explained that these tiny, titanium wonders mimic the root of a tooth and actually bond with the bone. “They don’t just sit in the mouth like dentures used to; they integrate with the bone and become a part of the body itself,” he said, describing how they provide a permanent, natural look that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Interestingly, despite implants being a cutting-edge solution, there isn’t a specific educational pathway for them in most dental schools. Prof. Verma reminisced about his own training, when he traveled to Chennai in 2005 to complete a grueling 300-hour course in dental implants. “Back then, the journey was long, the training intense, but that foundation is what has brought us here today,” he said. Thanks to organizations like the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) and the World Congress of Oral Implantologists (WCOI), implant education has taken shape, with structured courses and global guidelines.
The conference, he noted, is designed as a space for such knowledge sharing. This year, it brings together 800 to 900 doctors, including 45 international speakers from 14 countries, along with 65 Indian experts, to discuss the latest in implant technology. Over 60 companies will also exhibit, showcasing everything from advanced materials to new procedures. This immersive gathering aims to equip dentists with hands-on knowledge through workshops, presentations, and even exams with certifications, providing a complete educational experience.
Set to be inaugurated by Union Minister Anurag Thakur and G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant, the conference symbolizes India’s growing stature in global dental care. “Our goal is simple,” said Prof. Verma. “To offer patients the best, most natural, and life-changing treatment possible.” It’s clear he believes that dental implants aren’t just transforming smiles; they’re transforming lives.
