Elevating Frontline Health Workers: A Global Call to Action for Cervical Cancer Elimination
On November 17, 2024, the global community will celebrate four years of the movement to eliminate cervical cancer. This movement began in 2020 when 194 countries committed to eradicating a cancer for the first time in history. That same year, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched the Global Strategy to Eliminate Cervical Cancer, marking a historic milestone with the first-ever Day of Action for Cervical Cancer Elimination.
Since then, the annual event has grown into a significant moment for governments, advocates, and civil society to come together, make new commitments toward the targets set by the Global Strategy, and raise awareness. First Ladies continue to mobilize communities, and local organizations host various initiatives to drive action.
This year, the focus will be on recognizing and uplifting the frontline health workers who play an indispensable role in the fight to eliminate cervical cancer. Nurses and other frontline health workers are often the first—and sometimes the only—health professionals that many women encounter. They provide essential information about vaccines, screenings, and treatments, shaping the delivery of interventions that meet the needs of women in their communities. These health workers are leading the charge in the global movement and are instrumental in helping to make cervical cancer elimination a reality.
On November 17, we invite people around the world to join in this movement. Local activities can include screening campaigns, health worker training sessions, marches, or advocacy campaigns to raise awareness. Everyone is encouraged to share their stories and photos of their activities on this day. No matter what actions are taken, each effort is vital in supporting cervical cancer elimination and honoring the health workers who are at the forefront of this lifesaving mission.
