Bringing Smiles Back: Free Dentures for Seniors in East Delhi

Imagine being able to eat your favorite foods, smile confidently, and improve your health—all thanks to a simple yet life-changing initiative. That’s exactly what the Mobile Dental Clinic Project under the National Oral Health Program of the National Health Mission is doing for senior citizens in East Delhi.

In a heartfelt effort to cater to the oral healthcare needs of the elderly, the project has kicked off free denture delivery camps at dispensaries in Vasundhara and Mayur Vihar Phase 3, Gharoli. This isn’t just about teeth—it’s about restoring dignity, confidence, and a better quality of life for the elderly.

Dr. Vikrant Mohanty, Head and Professor of Community Dentistry from Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS) and the force behind this initiative, shared the vision. “For over a decade, our Mobile Dental Clinic Project has been making oral healthcare accessible to those who need it most. With our AMMA initiative focused on geriatric oral health, we’re taking things a step further. Today, in collaboration with the Delhi government, we’re bringing denture services directly to the community. From clinical procedures to the final fitting, it’s all happening onsite—for free.”

The process is simple and thoughtful. After screening the patients, the team arranges for dentures to be prepared and fitted, ensuring high standards of hygiene and precision. “We’re giving people back the ability to chew their food, smile confidently, and improve their overall health,” Dr. Mohanty added. “It’s not just about teeth—it’s about transforming lives.”

Dr. Swati Jain, Consultant for the Mobile Dental Clinic Project, spoke passionately about the barriers seniors face in accessing dental care. “Many elders can’t afford treatment or struggle to visit hospitals regularly. That’s where we come in. Partnering with the Social Welfare Department, we’ve reached out to senior citizens, screened them, and learned just how much they suffer due to missing teeth. This initiative is our way of saying, ‘We see you, and we care.’”

And the response? Heartwarming. Each patient leaves the camp not just with new dentures but with renewed confidence and hope. For many, this is the first time they’ve been able to eat comfortably or smile without hesitation in years.

As the team from MAIDS continues to lead this groundbreaking initiative, it’s clear that this is about much more than oral healthcare—it’s about restoring joy and dignity, one smile at a time.
