Stroke Center Successfully Treats Life-Threatening Stroke with Advanced Neuro-Intervention
A severe ischemic stroke in a 61-year-old patient, Ms. Madhu Jain, has been successfully treated at Delhi’s Aakash Healthcare with advanced neuro-intervention, demonstrating the critical role of multidisciplinary expertise and rapid-response protocols. The patient, who experienced a sudden fall accompanied by left-sided paralysis and loss of speech, received timely treatment at a state-of-the-art Stroke Center, showcasing the importance of stroke-ready facilities.
On the morning of September 24, 2024, Ms. Jain was rushed to the hospital in a drowsy state with significant left limb weakness, facial asymmetry, and aphasia (loss of speech). Initial brain scans revealed early-stage ischemic stroke, and a detailed CT Angiogram confirmed major blockages in the right internal carotid artery and middle cerebral artery.
“Stroke cases are a race against time. Every second counts,” emphasised Dr. Minal Chaudhry, Director of Radiology and Interventional Radiology. "Quick decisions and immediate action are crucial to prevent irreversible brain damage."
Ms. Jain’s history of rheumatic heart disease and atrial fibrillation further complicated her case. Despite the life-threatening condition, the multidisciplinary team swiftly activated the hospital's 'Stroke Code' protocol.
Dr. Madhukar Bhardwaj, Director and HOD, Department of Neurology, stated, “We decided to perform a mechanical thrombectomy, a minimally invasive procedure to remove the clot, as it offered the best chance of recovery given the extent of vascular occlusion.”
Dr. Abhishek Bansal, Senior Consultant and Chief of Interventional Radiology, elaborated on the procedure: “Using a catheter inserted through the femoral artery, we reached the blocked artery in the brain. Aspiration thrombectomy, a suction technique, was employed to remove the clot and restore blood flow without complications.”
The results were extraordinary. Within 48 hours, Ms. Jain regained her strength and speech, showing significant neurological improvement. By September 26, she was discharged in stable condition.
“This case highlights the importance of collaboration between Neurology and Neuro-Intervention,” said Dr. Savyasachi, Associate Consultant in Interventional
