Vallabh Bhai Patel Chest Institute Hosts Major Conference on Lung and Respiratory Health

The 58th Annual Conference of the Indian College of Allergy, Asthma, and Applied Immunology is currently underway at Delhi’s VallabhBhai Patel Chest Institute (VPCI), bringing together experts, researchers, and healthcare professionals from across India and beyond. This four-day event, which kicked off on December 19, 2024, is diving deep into the latest advancements in allergy treatment, immunotherapy, and respiratory health.

The conference started with a hands-on workshop on December 19, focusing on the evolving world of allergies and immunotherapy. Experts shared insights into cutting-edge pulmonary function tests that are shaping the way we approach lung health. And that’s just the beginning. On December 21 and 22, attendees will be treated to an impressive lineup of 80 lectures, panel discussions, and even debates — all designed to ignite conversations on the future of respiratory medicine.

In his address, Prof Raj Kumar, Director, (VPCI) painted a concerning picture: between 20% and 30% of Indians are affected by some form of allergy. This highlights the urgent need for better awareness and more effective treatments. He also weighed in on the recent National Medical Commission (NMC) decision to remove respiratory medicine from the MBBS curriculum. Prof. Kumar firmly believes that respiratory health education is a cornerstone in India’s fight against tuberculosis (TB), and without it, we risk making less progress in tackling the disease.

With over 300 doctors, faculty, and researchers participating, the conference has attracted not just local professionals, but also experts from the US, UK, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. This gathering is not just about learning — it’s about forging new connections, sharing knowledge, and ultimately working together to improve lung and respiratory health across the globe.

It’s clear that this year’s conference is more than just an event; it’s a pivotal moment in the ongoing conversation about how we can better understand and manage allergies, asthma, and respiratory diseases in an ever-changing world.
