Prof M Srinivas Speaking To The Media

AIIMS: A Lifeline to 5 Million Patients Every Year

Delhi-AIIMS, often called the heartbeat of India’s healthcare system, is a lifeline for over five million patients who walk through its doors every year. Sharing these remarkable statistics during a New Year’s Eve media interaction, AIIMS Director Prof. M. Srinivas highlighted the institution’s unwavering commitment to excellence in healthcare.

“Imagine this—every year, we admit around three lakh patients, perform thousands of surgeries, and attend to approximately 800 emergency cases daily,” Prof. Srinivas shared, painting a vivid picture of AIIMS’ monumental impact on patient care.

To make the experience more seamless for patients, AIIMS has introduced innovative public dashboards. These provide real-time updates on wait times, bed availability, and treatment outcomes, making healthcare more transparent and accessible. “We want our patients to feel informed and cared for at every step,” Prof. Srinivas emphasized.

The institute has also revolutionised its appointment system with an easy-to-use online registration platform. By issuing 8,35,000 ABHA ID cards (Ayushman Bharat Health Account), AIIMS has streamlined healthcare access, saving countless hours for patients and caregivers. Remarkably, in 2024 alone, the institute facilitated 33,000 treatments under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, achieving nearly 40% growth compared to the previous year.

AIIMS is also making room for more hope. With a 50% increase in operating theatres, a 40% boost in ICU beds, and a 34% rise in inpatient department beds, the hospital is better equipped to handle the rising demand. Extended OT hours and enhanced radiology and lab services have cut down surgery wait times, providing faster relief to patients. The addition of four Amrit Pharmacies and family-friendly spaces—like airport-style lounges, play areas, and a library for children—further ensures comfort and care beyond just treatment.

For international patients, AIIMS has rolled out a dedicated helpdesk and a multilingual portal, solidifying its reputation as a global hub for world-class medical services.

But AIIMS isn’t just about today; it’s about building the future of medicine. With cutting-edge facilities like the Centralised Research Facility (CCRF) and the Center for Medical Innovation and Entrepreneurship, AIIMS is pioneering advancements in medical research. As a designated Centre of Excellence in Healthcare AI, the institute is shaping the future of artificial intelligence in healthcare. Its robotic surgery training program, the first of its kind in a government hospital, and collaborations with the Armed Forces Medical Services on high-altitude and space medicine underline its forward-thinking vision.

Governance at AIIMS has seen a digital transformation too. Timely recruitment processes, biometric attendance, GPS-tracked staff vehicles, and structured governance meetings are making the institution more efficient and accountable. Digital tools like e-Office systems and automated procurement are not just modernizing operations but also saving ₹100 crores annually.

Security has been ramped up with AI-enabled CCTV systems featuring facial recognition, ensuring a safer environment for everyone on campus.

“Our mission is simple but profound—to innovate, expand, and set new standards in patient care and medical research,” Prof. Srinivas concluded. With every new initiative and achievement, AIIMS reaffirms its commitment to serving millions, not just as a hospital, but as a beacon of hope and progress in healthcare.
