PM Modi Highlights India's Achievements in Combating Malaria and Cancer

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spotlighted India’s significant progress in the battles against malaria and cancer during the 117th episode of his radio program, Mann Ki Baat. He described these achievements as milestones that have drawn global attention, showcasing the collective strength and determination of the Indian people.

Speaking about malaria, the Prime Minister emphasized its long-standing impact on humanity, describing it as a challenge that has persisted for over 4,000 years. “Even at the time of Independence, it was one of our biggest health challenges,” Modi noted, highlighting its devastating toll on children. Quoting a World Health Organization (WHO) report, he proudly shared that India has witnessed an 80% reduction in malaria cases and deaths between 2015 and 2023.

Modi credited this success to nationwide public participation, particularly acknowledging the efforts of the tea garden workers in Jorhat, Assam, and the residents of Kurukshetra, Haryana. “In the tea gardens of Jorhat, malaria was a major concern until four years ago. But with unity and determination, the people there have achieved remarkable success, leveraging both technology and social media,” he said. Similarly, he commended Kurukshetra’s innovative approach, where street plays and radio campaigns raised awareness about mosquito breeding, resulting in substantial progress in malaria control.

Turning to cancer, Modi referenced a recent study published in The Lancet, which highlights a dramatic improvement in timely cancer treatment in India. He attributed this success to the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, the government’s flagship health insurance scheme.

“Due to this scheme, 90% of cancer patients are now able to start their treatment within 30 days,” Modi stated. He emphasized that financial barriers had previously discouraged many from seeking cancer diagnosis and care. “The Ayushman Bharat Yojana has provided crucial support, making treatment accessible and reducing the financial burden for poor patients,” he added.

The Prime Minister’s remarks underline India’s strides in addressing critical public health challenges, demonstrating the power of collective action and robust healthcare initiatives in improving lives.
