Major Recall of Baked Goods Over Listeria Contamination Concerns

Approximately 2 million baked goods have been recalled due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, according to federal safety regulators. The recall, initiated on Jan. 7, 2025, was upgraded to a Class II recall on Feb. 5, reflecting concerns over potential health risks.

The manufacturer, FGF Brands, which supplies baked goods across the United States and Canada, stated that the voluntary recall was "a precautionary measure based on non-product-related findings" at one of its U.S.-based doughnut facilities. The company emphasized that "no doughnuts or food contact surfaces ever tested positive for Listeria."

The recall was reportedly completed in early January, ensuring that no affected products remain on the market. Among the recalled items were a variety of chocolate, raspberry, and Bavarian doughnuts, French crullers, eclairs, and coffee rolls. Some of these products were distributed through Dunkin’ and were manufactured before Dec. 13, 2024.

Listeria is a bacterial infection that poses significant health risks, particularly to older adults, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that Listeria monocytogenes is the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the United States. Symptoms of infection include fever, muscle aches, and fatigue, while severe cases can lead to complications such as stiff neck, confusion, seizures, and, in pregnant women, pregnancy loss or life-threatening infections in newborns.

Despite the precautionary recall, no specific source of contamination has been identified. Health officials advise consumers who may have purchased affected products to discard them and monitor for any symptoms of illness.

This recall serves as a reminder of the importance of stringent food safety measures and prompt action to prevent potential public health risks.
