IndiaAI and ICMR Join Hands to Build AI-Driven Healthcare Ecosystem in India

IndiaAI, the Government of India’s flagship artificial intelligence initiative under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to strengthen the use of AI in healthcare and biomedical research.

The partnership, implemented through the Digital India Corporation (DIC), aims to create a more integrated and scalable AI ecosystem for healthcare in India.

Officials said the collaboration will combine IndiaAI’s digital infrastructure and AI capabilities with ICMR’s expertise in medical research and public health to support the development of AI-driven healthcare solutions.

Under the agreement, ICMR will contribute anonymised and ethics-approved health datasets, AI models, and research toolkits developed through its Medical Information Data for AI Solutions (MIDAS) framework to the AIKosh platform. This is expected to improve access to quality biomedical datasets for researchers, startups, and innovators working in the healthcare sector.

IndiaAI, on the other hand, will provide ICMR with access to GPU-based and high-performance computing infrastructure at subsidised rates to help scale advanced AI research projects.

The collaboration will also focus on developing AI-based solutions for key public health challenges in India by combining disease burden data from ICMR with IndiaAI’s technology infrastructure.

Officials said the partnership builds on earlier cooperation between the two institutions. In 2025, IndiaAI and ICMR’s National Institute for Research in Digital Health and Data Sciences (NIRDHDS) were recognised as Pioneer Countries under the HealthAI Global Regulatory Network, an international initiative supported by the United Kingdom and Singapore to promote responsible AI governance in healthcare.

A later tripartite agreement involving IndiaAI, ICMR, and HealthAI further expanded efforts to build a responsible and interoperable AI healthcare ecosystem in the country.

The latest collaboration is expected to accelerate innovation in healthcare technology while maintaining focus on ethical AI practices, patient data privacy, and regulatory compliance.
