AIIMS Celebrates 70 Years, Highlights Research as Foundation of India’s Healthcare Future
As the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, marks seventy years of service to the nation, the institute has reiterated its commitment to research, innovation, and evidence-based healthcare that serves both patients and public policy.
Founded in 1956, AIIMS was conceived as more than a hospital or a teaching institution. Over the past seven decades, it has evolved into a leading center for medical research and clinical excellence, playing a pivotal role in shaping modern Indian medicine. Contributions from its researchers, clinicians, scientists, nurses, students, and staff have influenced clinical practice, strengthened public health, and guided health policy in India and beyond.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. M. Srinivas, Director, AIIMS New Delhi, said, “From its very beginning, AIIMS was envisioned as a place where new knowledge is created in the service of society. Over seven decades, this culture of inquiry has shaped clinical practice, strengthened public health, and influenced policy across India and beyond.”
The institute’s research legacy was underscored during AIIMS Research Day 2026, which showcased the diversity and depth of scientific work being carried out across departments. The event highlighted AIIMS’ transition from excellence in patient care to leadership in knowledge generation.
“At a time when India’s health challenges are becoming more complex, our responsibility as a national institution is also growing,” Prof. Srinivas said. “The strength of AIIMS lies in its ability to integrate science with compassion and evidence with action. The ideas generated here are not just academic achievements, but the foundation for better treatment, stronger health systems, and healthier lives.”
Acknowledging the collective efforts of the AIIMS community, the Director expressed appreciation for the dedication of faculty members, researchers, healthcare professionals, and support staff who sustain the institute’s reputation for excellence.
“As we celebrate seven decades of AIIMS, we must reaffirm our shared commitment to discovery that serves patients, informs policy, and advances the future of healthcare in India,” Prof. Srinivas added.
