Telmisartan

Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist used primarily to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). It works by blocking the action of angiotensin II, a substance in the body that causes blood vessels to tighten, thereby relaxing blood vessels and lowering blood pressure.

Indications

-Hypertension (high blood pressure)

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 40 mg once daily. The dosage may be increased to 80 mg once daily based on blood pressure response.

Contra-Indications

In patients with biliary obstructive disorders or hepatic insufficiency, pregnancy and lactation.

Special Precautions

-Renal impairment -Hepatic impairment -Hypotension -Hyperkalemia

Side Effects

Upper respiratory tract infection, dizziness, back pain, sinusitis, diarrhoea.

Drug Interactions

-Potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g., spironolactone) -NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) -Lithium
