Ferrous Sulphate

Ferrous Sulphate

Ferrous Sulphate is an iron supplement used to treat or prevent iron deficiency anemia. It provides the body with iron, which is essential for producing red blood cells and hemoglobin. This medication helps in replenishing iron levels and improving overall energy and well-being.

Indications

-Treatment of iron deficiency anemia. -Prevention of iron deficiency in pregnant women, children, and individuals with poor dietary intake of iron. -Management of anemia related to chronic blood loss or certain medical conditions.

Dosage

-Adults: Typically 100-200 mg of elemental iron per day, divided into 1-2 doses. -Children: Dosage varies based on age and iron deficiency severity; consult a healthcare provider for appropriate dosage. -Pregnant Women: Recommended dosage is usually 30-60 mg of elemental iron per day.

Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to ferrous sulphate or any component of the formulation. -Hemochromatosis (iron overload conditions). -Hemosiderosis (iron accumulation in the tissues).

Special Precautions

-Should be taken on an empty stomach for better absorption, but can be taken with food if gastrointestinal discomfort occurs. -Avoid simultaneous use with antacids or calcium supplements as they can interfere with iron absorption. -Monitor for signs of iron overload, particularly in patients with chronic blood disorders.

Side Effects

-Common: Constipation, nausea, stomach upset, and dark stools. -Less common: Allergic reactions, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and iron toxicity (in cases of overdose).

Drug Interactions

-Antacids: Can decrease iron absorption; separate doses by at least 2 hours. -Calcium Supplements: May reduce iron absorption; take at different times. -Certain Antibiotics (e.g., tetracyclines): May have reduced effectiveness when taken with iron.
