MILK OF MAGNESIA
Milk of Magnesia, also known by its generic name magnesium hydroxide, is an over-the-counter medication commonly used as an antacid and laxative. It is available as a white, chalky suspension and helps neutralize stomach acid, alleviate indigestion, and promote bowel movements. As an alkaline substance, it acts to balance the acidity in the stomach and soften stools for easier passage.-Heartburn or acid indigestion. -Constipation or irregular bowel movements.
-For antacid purposes: Adults can take 5 to 15 mL (1 to 3 teaspoons) as needed up to 4 times daily. -For laxative purposes: Adults can take 30 to 60 mL (2 to 4 tablespoons) once daily.
-Kidney disease or impairment. -Severe abdominal pain or obstruction. -Known hypersensitivity to magnesium hydroxide.
-Prolonged use can lead to electrolyte imbalances, especially in individuals with renal impairment. -Use cautiously in individuals on a magnesium-restricted diet. -Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should consult a healthcare provider before use.
-Diarrhea (common with laxative use). -Stomach cramps or discomfort. -Electrolyte imbalances, particularly with excessive use.
May affect the absorption of other drugs due to its ability to alter stomach pH.
