NEOMYCIN SULPHATE
Neomycin Sulphate is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that is used to reduce the risk of infection during surgery and to treat certain bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.-Prevention of bacterial infections in surgical procedures -Treatment of superficial bacterial infections of the skin -Reduction of bacteria in the intestines before bowel surgery -Treatment of hepatic coma
-Adults: 500 mg to 1 g taken orally every 4 to 6 hours, up to a maximum of 4 g per day -Children: Dosage must be determined by a physician -Topical Application: Apply a small amount to the affected area 2 to 3 times daily
-Hypersensitivity to neomycin or other aminoglycosides -Severe renal impairment -Intestinal obstruction -Patients with myasthenia gravis
-Monitor renal function during prolonged therapy -Avoid use in patients with existing hearing impairment -Use with caution in elderly patients -Not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless absolutely necessary
-Nausea and vomiting -Diarrhea -Allergic reactions such as rash and itching -Ototoxicity (hearing loss) -Nephrotoxicity (kidney damage) -Superinfection with prolonged use
-Concurrent use with other nephrotoxic or ototoxic drugs may increase the risk of toxicity -Can interact with oral anticoagulants, reducing their effectiveness -Avoid concurrent use with potent diuretics
