Telmisartan with Amlodipine
Telmisartan with Amlodipine is a combination medication used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It contains two active ingredients: telmisartan, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), and amlodipine, a calcium channel blocker. Telmisartan blocks the action of angiotensin II, a substance that narrows blood vessels and releases hormones causing the retention of sodium and water. Amlodipine relaxes blood vessels and improves blood flow by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle cells. This combination is indicated for the treatment of hypertension in patients for whom combination therapy is appropriate.
The recommended dosage may vary depending on individual patient response. Typically, a starting dose of one tablet containing telmisartan 40 mg and amlodipine 5 mg is administered once daily. The dosage can be adjusted based on the patient's response, with a maximum recommended dose of telmisartan 80 mg and amlodipine 10 mg once daily.
This medication is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation, in pregnancy, and in patients with severe hepatic impairment.
-Caution is advised in patients with impaired renal function. -Regular monitoring of blood pressure and renal function is recommended. -Dizziness or lightheadedness may occur, especially during the first few days of treatment or after dosage adjustments.
Common side effects may include dizziness, swelling of ankles or legs, flushing, headache, and fatigue. Contact a healthcare professional if these effects persist or worsen.
Potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics may increase the risk of hyperkalemia. Concomitant use with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors or inducers may affect drug levels.
