TESTOSTERONE

It is secretd by the interstitial (Leydig) cells of the testes under the influence of LH from pituitary. FSH is mainly responsible for promotion of spermatogenesis in tubular cells. Testosterone is responsible for all the changes that occur in a body at puberty.It is needed for normal spermatogenesis and maturation of spermatozoa & promotes muscle building specially if aided by exercise.

Indications

Testicular failure : Hypogonadal disorders, eunuchiodism, hypopituitarism, endocrine impotence, loss of libido, delayed puberty, climacteric symptoms. Carcinoma of breast. Osteoporosis, infertility due to disorders of spermatogenesis. Hereditary angioneurotic oedema. Females : Genital carcinoma, endometriosis, fibroids. Breast carcinoma. Menopausal syndrome.


Contra-Indications

Prostate and male breast carcinoma. Liver and kidney disease. Pregnancy (Maculinization of female foetus).


Special Precautions

Prolonged admin. to children (shortening of stature). Hypertension. Myocardial dysfunction. Nephrotic syndrome.


Side Effects

Virilization & menstrual irregularities, Acne, frequent painful penile errections. Oligozoo-spermia. Precocious puberty, oedema,cholestatic jaundice. Hepatic carcinoma. Gynaecomastia.


Drug Interactions

Poentiates anticoagulants,oral hypoglycaemic agents. Rifampicin, phenobarb may increase rate of metabolism.
