Foods that can reduce blood sugar

Our body is made up of complex systems where each organ and tissue are assigned a specific role. Any disturbance in the functioning of tissues directly impacts the body as a whole. Humans require energy for performing activities, which comes from the food that we take. The body has a system through which the sugar in the body obtained from food is converted into fats, making them available as and when needed.

When the body is unable to produce a hormone called insulin in enough quantities, the blood sugar level rises, resulting in a condition called diabetes sets in.

Available data suggest that type 2 diabetes resulted in over 1.5 million deaths worldwide, a condition that can be managed by making lifestyle changes including dietary habits.

Here we highlight some foods that can help in reducing blood sugars.
  • Cinnamon: Native to Sri Lanka, the Malabar Coast of India, and Myanmar cinnamon is a popular spice known for its delicately fragrant aroma and warm sweet flavour. Animal studies indicate that rats fed on an aqueous solution of Cinnamon reported a substantial lowering of blood glucose levels. You can simply add freshly grounded cinnamon power into your food before eating to impart a delicate flavour along with lowering your blood sugar.
  • Garlic: Allicin, a compound found in garlic is effective in controlling blood sugar. Moreover, multiple studies report that garlic extracts have been shown to increase insulin in the body which is required to metabolise sugar in the body.
  • Methi: Methi or Fenugreek is a common spice used across India and has several health benefits, including lowering of blood sugar levels. Soak fenugreek in lukewarm water and drink it the next morning for the best results.
  • Complex Carbohydrates: Even though complex carbohydrates found in whole cereals like whet raise blood sugar levels, their action is different from that of simple carbohydrates like refined flour. Simple carbohydrates shoot up blood sugar levels immediately while the former provides a steady stream of energy. So go for whole grains wherever possible.
  • Nuts: Nuts are low on carbohydrates and rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, protein and fibres. Studies have found that Almonds reduce the spike in blood sugars especially when taken after meals.
  • Cherries: Cherries are full of anthocyanins,  water-soluble pigments. Studies indicate that anthocyanins may increase insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake in vital organs like muscles and fatty tissues and hence, can improve insulin resistance among diabetics.
