Successful Management of Non-Cirrhotic Portal Hypertension During Pregnancy: A Collaborative Effort by BirthRight and Star Hospitals

BirthRight by Rainbow Hospitals, in collaboration with Star Hospitals in Financial District, recently achieved remarkable success in ensuring a safe childbirth for a woman battling Non-Cirrhotic Portal Hypertension (NCPH).

Dr. Himabindu Annamraju, a renowned expert in maternal-fetal medicine at BirthRight, underlines the pivotal role of coordinated clinical support in addressing complex medical conditions during pregnancy. This achievement highlights the effectiveness of teamwork and specialized care in maternal health.

The patient, a 30-year-old woman diagnosed with Non-Cirrhotic Portal Hypertension (NCPH), sought medical assistance at Star Hospitals when she was 17 weeks into her pregnancy. Facing grade 3 varices with RCS, an enlarged spleen, and a low platelet count of 35,000, she was referred to BirthRight by Rainbow Hospitals for a safe delivery.

The multidisciplinary team at Rainbow Children’s Hospital, BirthRight by Rainbow, and Star Hospitals, Financial District, collaborated to assess the patient's condition and discuss potential risks. They provided comprehensive care, closely monitoring her coagulation levels, fetal heart rate, and overall health throughout the pregnancy.

Given the complexities of her condition, the patient eventually underwent a cesarean section. Due to the impact of liver conditions on bleeding factors and coagulation profiles, she was carefully managed using advanced techniques such as TEG to assess and correct coagulation, ensuring optimal outcomes intra and postoperatively.

Dr. Srinivasa Reddy, Consultant Hepatology & Liver Transplant Physician at Star Hospitals Financial District, explains that NCPH during pregnancy poses significant risks, including bleeding or liver failure, necessitating specialized care.

Dr. Himabindu Annamraju, Senior Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology at BirthRight by Rainbow Hospitals, commends the meticulous planning and teamwork involved in ensuring a safe delivery for patients with NCPH. She emphasizes the importance of specialist medical care in managing pregnancy with liver disease, highlighting the risks of hypertension, pre-eclampsia, and intrauterine growth restriction.

With close monitoring, regular tests, and patient education, the team successfully ensured the safety of both mother and child in this complex medical scenario, achieving a positive outcome for both.
