AIIMS Set to Launch Electric Bus Service to Ease Patient Commute

Navigating the route to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has been a considerable challenge for patients and their families, with the need to walk from nearby metro stations and bus stands or rely on costly auto-rickshaws, which can cost up to Rs 100 for a round trip. To address these difficulties, AIIMS is set to introduce a new electric bus service aimed at improving last-mile connectivity.

This new initiative will feature air-conditioned electric buses equipped with modern conveniences, including low floors for easier access and wheelchair compatibility. These eBuses will transport patients and their caregivers from metro stations and bus stops directly to the hospital campus, significantly alleviating the current transportation issues.

The service will run regularly, with buses operating every 10 minutes during peak hours between 7 am and 7 pm, and every 15 minutes on Mondays and non-holidays. Stops will be equipped with shelters and call buttons to ensure convenience, while security will be enhanced with CCTV cameras and GPS tracking for real-time monitoring. A dedicated app will offer real-time bus tracking and service feedback, and fare collection will be streamlined through UPI and AIIMS Smart Card options.

The introduction of these eBuses is expected to reduce traffic congestion, decrease environmental pollution, and minimize noise, providing a more sustainable transportation option for patients.

Dr. M. Srinivas, Director of  Delhi-AIIMS, highlighted the significance of this new service, stating, “Our goal is to continuously enhance patient care by addressing transportation issues. This new service will provide a reliable and convenient travel option within the campus, significantly improving the patient experience.”

Dr. Rima Dada, In-Charge of the Media Cell, emphasized the commitment to making the patient journey as smooth and hassle-free as possible. She noted, “This service reflects our commitment to moving passengers efficiently, inspired by innovations in transportation.”

The launch of the eBus service represents a major improvement in patient transportation, offering a more accessible and patient-centered experience at AIIMS.
