Kolkata High Court Orders CBI Probe into Controversial Social Media Post; People’s Movement for Justice Gains Momentum

The Calcutta High Court has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate a contentious social media post including a photograph of the junior doctor, a victim of the August 9 rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College. The images were allegedly released using bogus accounts, causing anger across the nation.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hironmoy Bhattacharya took a clear stance on the issue and ordered the CBI to submit a report on its findings by September 18. Chief Justice Sivagnanam expressed alarm over the message, saying, "Such acts should not be acceptable to society."

The horrible incident, which took the life of a female junior doctor, set up a political and social firestorm in West Bengal. While the CBI has already taken up the investigation into the murder, the recent issue regarding the victim's image on social media has fuelled even more calls for justice. Locals across the state spontaneously protested the incident, demanding a speedy and transparent trial to ensure the perpetrators face justice.

People from all walks of life came together for a massive protest at Shyambazar's five-point intersection on September 4 to demand justice for the doctors and students killed at RG Kar Medical College.

When cinema personality Rituparna Sengupta attempted to attend the protest, she was heckled, and her security staff had to put her in her car and struggle to get her away. The actor describes her traumatic experience. "I came as a neutral, non-political human being, standing by another woman, but what I saw was the sheer anger and frustration of the people."

"I want justice, too. "The protests will continue in my heart," she added.

Across Kolkata and abroad, spontaneous demonstrations continue to emerge, representing the collective call for justice. One particularly moving occasion was the candlelight vigil outside RG Kar Hospital, when people, doctors, and health workers stood together under the slogan "On the Path of Light to Justice." The hospital has become a focal point for the protests, with demonstrators vowing to fight until justice is served.

Another demonstration at Jadavpur's 8-B bus terminus echoed identical sentiments. Slogans demanding justice filled the air as hundreds held vigils late into the night. One demonstrator expressed the passion of those seeking justice by declaring, "We will not rest until we arrest the real culprits and hold those hiding them accountable."

The controversy surrounding the crime goes beyond the murder itself. The discovery of the victim's body with severe injuries in the lecture room of RG Kar Hospital has only fueled public distrust due to issues with the investigation procedure. The complaint was filed 11 hours after the body was discovered, and many have questioned why it was cremated shortly after the examination.

The victim's parents, who arrived at the hospital shortly after 9 p.m. joined the swelling campaign demanding justice. Doctors, healthcare workers, and civilians have formed human chains to demand accountability. " This is not simply a protest. "It is a call to honour a commitment to justice," said one doctor who participated in the demonstrations.

As the protests extended throughout the state and beyond, RG Kar Medical College became a symbol of the struggle for truth. On the night of August 14, protesters allege attempts to destroy evidence, intensifying their demands for transparency and justice. The massive outcry has spread far beyond Bengal, with residents from all over the country joining in support of the protests.

The CBI's inquiry into the social media post is the latest phase in the ongoing search for justice following the terrible murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College. As people's movement intensifies, the demands for accountability and transparency get louder. The widespread fury over the investigation's delays and inconsistencies has sparked a strong demand for justice that shows no signs of abating. The route forward may be long, but the people's determination is unwavering.
