RG Kar Hospital Doctors Remain on Strike Despite Supreme Court Deadline

The resident doctors of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata have not resumed work, despite a warning issued by the Supreme Court, which directed them to return to duty by 5 p.m. today.

The strike began on August 9, following the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old female postgraduate resident doctor. This tragic incident has sparked widespread outrage, leading to the ongoing protest, as the doctors demand justice for their colleague and enhanced safety measures at the hospital.

The Supreme Court had earlier intervened, setting a deadline for the striking doctors to return to their posts, warning of legal consequences if they failed to comply. However, as of the deadline, the doctors have remained steadfast in their protest, citing unresolved concerns over safety and justice.

The strike has significantly impacted medical services at the hospital, and the deadlock between the authorities and the protesting doctors continues, raising concerns about patient care at one of Kolkata’s major public hospitals.
