World Mental Health Day: Prioritising Mental Well-Being in the Workplace
This World Mental Health Day, the World Health Organization (WHO) is joining forces with partners to emphasize the crucial link between mental health and work. Safe and healthy working environments serve as vital protective factors for mental well-being. In contrast, unhealthy conditions—including stigma, discrimination, and exposure to risks like harassment—can significantly jeopardize mental health, diminish overall quality of life, and reduce workplace productivity.
With 60% of the global population engaged in work, the urgency to mitigate risks to mental health in the workplace has never been more critical. Unsafe work conditions can lead to a cascade of negative effects that impact not only individual employees but also organizations and economies at large.
To foster a mentally healthy work environment, collaboration among governments, employers, and organizations representing both workers and employers is essential. Engaging workers and their representatives, along with those who have lived experience of mental health conditions, ensures that mental health initiatives are relevant and effective.
Investing resources in evidence-based approaches and interventions can empower individuals to thrive both at work and in their personal lives. As we observe World Mental Health Day, let’s commit to taking action today for a healthier and more supportive future in the workplace.
