In a landmark move to foster sustainable energy adoption in India’s healthcare and research sectors, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN). This collaboration aligns with the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India) and aims to contribute to a cleaner, greener future by harnessing solar power for ICMR’s operations across the country.

Under this MoU, NVVN will undertake the supply, installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of rooftop solar panels at 15 ICMR institutes, with a cumulative capacity of 4,559 KW. The project, designed to promote renewable energy adoption, includes a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for grid-connected solar installations, offering a fixed solar tariff over the next 25 years. This initiative will not only support ICMR’s sustainability goals but also ensure long-term cost efficiency in energy consumption.

Expanding Solarization Efforts Across ICMR Institutes

The partnership marks a major stride towards reducing the carbon footprint of healthcare research facilities in India. Seven ICMR institutes are already benefitting from solar power under previous projects, and the agreement with NVVN will now extend solarization efforts to more facilities. This will substantially lower energy expenses and make a significant impact on the institute's overall environmental footprint.

Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Director General of ICMR, highlighted the significance of the collaboration, stating, “The integration of renewable energy solutions at our research facilities not only aligns with the nation’s renewable energy goals but also sets a benchmark for sustainability in the biomedical research field. This initiative will pave the way for other research institutions to adopt similar green energy practices.”

The MoU comes at a time when the Indian healthcare sector is increasingly focusing on adopting green energy solutions to support the country’s renewable energy targets. The fixed tariff for solar energy under the PPA will safeguard ICMR from potential fluctuations in conventional energy costs, ensuring stable energy expenditures for the next 25 years.
