Mental Wellbeing Survey 2024: Insights on Mental Health in India

The ‘Feel Good with Fiama Mental Wellbeing Survey 2024,’ commissioned by ITC in collaboration with NielsenIQ, reveals significant insights into the perceptions and realities surrounding mental health in India. In its fourth year, the survey underscores both progress and persistent challenges regarding mental health awareness and access to professional support.

A striking 69% of participants reported that mental wellbeing issues negatively affect their overall health condition, while 65% indicated that these issues impact their sleep quality. These findings highlight the urgent need for addressing mental health as an integral component of overall health.

Despite growing acceptance of mental health conversations, societal stigma remains a significant barrier. While 83% of respondents acknowledged that mental health issues should not be a source of shame, 81% admitted feeling embarrassed about disclosing their therapy sessions. This fear of judgment continues to stifle open discussions about mental wellbeing, limiting access to necessary support.

The survey also emphasizes the unique pressures faced by younger generations. An overwhelming 83% of respondents believe that today’s youth experience higher levels of anxiety and fear of change compared to older generations. Furthermore, 82% of Gen Z participants expressed that individuals often overlook the symptoms of mental health concerns, indicating a pressing need for enhanced awareness and education.

Encouragingly, 80% of Gen Z participants felt that their parents would support them in seeking therapy, reflecting a shift toward greater acceptance within close social circles. However, barriers still exist, as 77% of surveyed individuals consider therapy to be costly, and 74% noted that mental health services are often excluded from health insurance coverage.

The survey also uncovered persistent stigmas surrounding mental health, with 55% of participants believing that therapy is for the weak. Additionally, 82% of respondents agreed that finding the right therapist requires significant effort, highlighting the challenges many face in seeking help.

As mental health continues to take center stage in public discourse, the findings from the Feel Good with Fiama Mental Wellbeing Survey 2024 serve as a crucial reminder of the ongoing need for awareness, education, and accessible mental health resources in India. The survey's results reflect both progress in destigmatizing mental health issues and the work that remains to ensure all individuals have the support they need.
