MAIDS Doctors During Free Denture Delivery Initiative

Free Denture Delivery Initiative Launched Under Project AMMA: A Step Toward Better Oral Health for Seniors

In a significant move toward improving senior oral health care, a new sub-initiative titled "Free Denture Delivery" has been launched under Project AMMA as part of the Mobile Dental Clinic Project. This initiative is designed to bridge the gap in dental care accessibility for elderly individuals, offering complete and partial dentures free of charge. The goal is to improve their quality of life by addressing dental needs that often go unmet, particularly for those who are homebound or residing in remote areas.

The initiative focuses not only on accessibility but also on educating seniors and caregivers about the importance of oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups. The comprehensive program aims to prevent complications related to tooth loss, such as nutritional deficiencies and increased cardiovascular risk, by promoting better oral health among the elderly.

Addressing a Growing Need

With the global population aging rapidly, India is witnessing a surge in its elderly demographic. According to the 2011 Census, India is home to nearly 104 million people aged 60 and above, with 5.9% of Delhi's population falling into this category. Projections estimate that this number will rise significantly in the coming years, with an estimated 24.24 lakh seniors in Delhi by 2026. This demographic shift brings with it a higher prevalence of non-communicable diseases, including those related to oral health.

Dental issues in the elderly often lead to broader health problems, including malnutrition, weakened immunity, and an increased risk of heart disease. Recognizing the urgent need for better oral care, Project AMMA was initiated in 2019 under the leadership of Dr. Vikrant Mohanty, MOI/C, and Dr. Swati Jain, Senior Consultant. The project focuses on delivering primary and secondary dental care to seniors through mobile dental clinics, ensuring they receive much-needed treatment in accessible locations.

Expanding Access to Dentures

Over the years, it has been observed that nearly 80-90% of elderly patients visiting outpatient departments for dental treatment have one or more missing teeth, severely affecting their ability to eat and speak comfortably. Many of these individuals face barriers such as financial constraints, lack of transportation, and limited availability of care.

In response to this pressing need, the Free Denture Delivery initiative was introduced. With funding from the Delhi State Health Mission, provisions have been made to deliver 100 complete and partial dentures this year. Mobile dental clinics, equipped with the necessary tools and staffed by trained professionals, will bring these services directly to the communities. This model helps eliminate transportation as a barrier and makes dental care more accessible to seniors who need it most.

Initially, these services have been rolled out at DGD Mayur Vihar Phase 3 and DGD Vasundhara Enclave, with plans for further expansion.

A Positive Step for Senior Health

Project AMMA’s Free Denture Delivery initiative represents a major advancement in addressing the dental health needs of India’s growing elderly population. By providing free dentures and comprehensive oral health services, the program aims to empower seniors, improve their health outcomes, and enhance their overall quality of life.

As part of the larger Mobile Dental Clinic Project, this initiative showcases the commitment to innovative healthcare delivery, ensuring that every senior has access to the care they deserve. Through ongoing support and development, Project AMMA continues to make strides in improving geriatric dental care in Delhi and beyond.
