A Tale of Resilience: 97-Year-Old Woman Undergoes Total Knee Replacement, Defying Age and Adversity

In a remarkable display of grit and determination, 97-year-old Resham Devi, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, has become a symbol of hope after successfully undergoing double knee replacement surgeries. Despite her advanced age and a host of age-related conditions, she is now regaining her mobility, thanks to the expertise of doctors at Fortis Hospital Vasant Kunj in Delhi.

The surgeries were performed by Dr. Dhananjay Gupta, Director of Orthopedics, Replacement, and Reconstruction, and his team, who meticulously planned and executed the complex procedures. “The real credit,” Dr. Gupta humbly said, “goes to Mrs. Devi herself, whose determination was the driving force behind this success.”

A Journey of Courage

Mrs. Devi, who has lived independently in an ashram in Vrindavan for the past 30 years, faced a serious setback last year after a fall that left her with a fractured and dislocated left hip. Though initially treated conservatively due to her frail condition, the pain and limitations of severe osteoarthritis in both knees left her struggling with basic tasks. Unwilling to accept a life of dependency, Mrs. Devi advocated for double knee replacement surgery to reclaim her mobility and independence.

Her determination was unwavering. Despite her age and complex medical history, she pushed for both knees to be replaced, even though Dr. Gupta’s team had initially suggested doing the surgeries in two stages. After extensive physiotherapy, bone-strengthening treatments, and a thorough pre-anaesthesia check, Mrs. Devi was cleared for surgery.

The Road to Recovery

The surgical team successfully replaced her left knee and, after monitoring her vitals closely, proceeded with the right knee. Mrs. Devi was moved to the ICU for overnight observation, but by the very next day, she was walking with the help of a walker, a significant milestone in her recovery journey.

Dr. Gupta, reflecting on the complexity of the case, said, “This was an extremely challenging surgery given her advanced age, but we knew that delaying it would severely impact her quality of life. Mobility is crucial for elderly patients, not just for physical health but for emotional well-being. We are thrilled with Mrs. Devi’s recovery and hope her story inspires others to seek timely medical intervention.”

Defying Age, Inspiring Others

For Mrs. Devi, the surgeries were not just about walking again—they were about living with dignity. Her story is a powerful reminder that age should not be a barrier to seeking treatment. Her recovery, marked by determination and resilience, has not only improved her physical health but has also given her a new lease on life.

Dr. Gurvinder Kaur, Facility Director at Fortis Hospital Vasant Kunj, echoed this sentiment: “Mrs. Devi’s case was unique and challenging, but it also highlights the capabilities of our team and the advanced technology we have here. Her success story is an inspiration, showing that even at 97, it’s possible to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds.”

A Message of Hope

As Mrs. Devi now resumes her daily activities with newfound freedom, her story serves as a beacon of hope for others, especially elderly individuals grappling with mobility issues. Her journey exemplifies the incredible impact that timely and expert medical care can have on quality of life.

In a world where age is often seen as a limitation, Mrs. Resham Devi’s story is a testament to the fact that it’s never too late to take control of your health and your future.
