Mumbai: AIMS Hospital Launches “Shakti” to Support Women Battling Breast Cancer
In a significant move to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, AIMS Hospital has launched "Shakti," a dedicated support group aimed at empowering women affected by breast cancer. This initiative seeks to offer emotional and practical support to patients and their families, creating a network where those currently fighting the disease can find encouragement and inspiration from survivors.
The launch event saw participation from around 150 individuals, including cancer patients, survivors, families, and medical experts. Among the notable attendees was social activist Mrs. Suhasi Ravindra Chavan, who graced the occasion as the Guest of Honor. The oncology team at AIMS Hospital, including Dr. Supriya Bambarkar, Director of Oncology, Breast Surgical Oncologist Dr. Neemesh Lodh, Medical & Hemato Oncologist Dr. Rakesh Patil, and Radiation Oncologist Dr. Sagar Gayakwad, were present to lend their expertise to the cause.
Empowering Women through Education and Support
"Shakti" is not just a support group; it is a movement to raise awareness about breast health, encouraging women to take charge of their well-being. The initiative emphasizes the importance of self-examinations and understanding the warning signs of breast cancer. In India, where breast cancer rates are steadily rising, early detection is critical, yet many women delay seeking medical advice, often ignoring signs like lumps or changes in their breasts until it's too late.
Dr. Neemesh Lodh, Breast Surgical Oncologist at AIMS Hospital, highlighted the importance of timely care, stating, "With proper treatment and a robust support system, many women can return to their normal lives post-recovery. 'Shakti' is a testament to the strength and resilience of breast cancer patients, fostering a community that stands together in hope and recovery."
A Holistic Approach to Breast Cancer Care
Through workshops, counseling, and peer support, "Shakti" creates a safe and nurturing space for breast cancer patients. It aims to provide not only medical care but also emotional support, enabling women to share their experiences, seek guidance, and find strength from one another.
“At AIMS Hospital, we believe care extends beyond the physical aspect of treatment. Our support group 'Shakti' is a step towards holistic care that addresses the emotional and social dimensions of the journey through breast cancer,” said Dr. Rakesh Patil, Medical & Hemato Oncologist. He emphasized the importance of regular self-examinations and mammograms after the age of 35 to detect cancer early, noting, “Breast cancer is treatable when detected early, so we encourage women to stay vigilant and never lose hope.”
AIMS Hospital: Pioneering Healthcare and Community Support
Mrs. Suhasi Ravindra Chavan, social activist and philanthropist, lauded the hospital’s efforts, stating, “AIMS Hospital stands at the forefront not only in medical innovation but also in community outreach initiatives. 'Shakti' will serve as a lifeline for many women, helping them fight and ultimately overcome the challenges posed by breast cancer.”
The launch of "Shakti" underscores AIMS Hospital's commitment to comprehensive care, offering not just advanced medical treatment but also the vital emotional and psychological support that breast cancer patients need during their journey. Through this initiative, the hospital hopes to inspire strength and solidarity, reminding all women that they are never alone in their battle against breast cancer.
