HCG Manavata Cancer Centre to Host 'Pink Mela' for Breast Cancer Awareness in Nashik

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Nashik’s leading cancer care facility, HCG Manavata Cancer Centre (HCGMCC), is organizing a special event titled 'Pink Mela' on 26th October 2024. The event is aimed at raising awareness about the increasing cases of breast cancer and promoting early detection through free consultations and live demonstrations for women aged 20 and above.

A team of expert doctors will be available at the event to review medical histories, assess breast cancer risks, and perform physical examinations, if necessary. In addition, HCGMCC is offering mammography tests at a significantly reduced price of Rs.550/- for the month, down from the regular Rs.7,150/-.

Dr. Raj Nagarkar, MD & Chief of Surgical Oncology & Robotic Services at HCGMCC, highlighted the importance of the event, stating, “Breast cancer accounts for nearly 30% of all cancers among women in India, making it the most common cancer affecting women in the country. The risk increases with age, especially for women in their 50s and 60s. Unfortunately, most cases are detected at later stages due to a lack of awareness and early screening. Through Pink Mela, we aim to educate women on preventive measures and the importance of regular check-ups, which can drastically improve early detection.”

Breast cancer begins when cells in the breast grow uncontrollably, forming a mass or lump. Although it primarily affects women, men can also develop the disease. Recently, Dr. Nagarkar achieved a major milestone by performing the world’s first robotic-assisted nipple-sparing mastectomy (RNSM), a pioneering technique in breast cancer surgery.

“Factors such as late pregnancies, family history, hormonal changes, and lifestyle habits like smoking and stress can increase the risk of developing breast cancer,” Dr. Nagarkar added. “With the growing prevalence of the disease, it is crucial to promote regular screenings and awareness. Early detection can increase the chances of survival by up to 80%. Pink Mela is an opportunity to empower women to take control of their health, particularly those at higher risk.”

The Pink Mela aims to make preventive care accessible and encourage women to prioritize regular check-ups, helping to combat the growing health crisis posed by breast cancer in India.
