RGCIRC Hosts Breakthrough Workshop on NDYAG Laser Lung Metastasectomy, Pioneering Cancer Treatment in India

The Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre (RGCIRC), a leading institution in cancer research and treatment, marked a significant milestone in oncology with its first workshop on NDYAG Laser Lung Metastasectomy. This event represents a groundbreaking advancement in the surgical treatment of metastatic lung cancer, offering new hope for patients battling advanced stages of the disease.


The workshop, which drew oncology surgeons from across India, featured live demonstrations of laser metastasectomy and hands-on training in advanced laser surgeries. The aim was to familiarize medical professionals with cutting-edge technologies designed to enhance cancer treatment and improve patient outcomes.

Lung metastasis occurs when cancer that originates in one part of the body spreads to the lungs, creating secondary or metastatic tumors. This condition differs from primary lung cancer, which begins directly in the lungs.

Laser Lung Metastasectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses laser technology to remove cancerous cells that have spread to the lungs from other parts of the body. Unlike traditional surgical methods, this technique cuts and seals lung tissue simultaneously, enabling surgeons to excise tumors while preserving a greater amount of healthy lung tissue.

During the workshop, Dr. L.M. Darlong, Head of Thoracic Oncosurgery at RGCIRC, explained the significance of this advanced surgical approach. “Laser metastasectomy surgery is designed not for primary lung cancer but for patients with metastasis to the lungs. It is particularly useful in stage 4 cases, where cancer has spread to the lungs and conventional treatments like chemotherapy and radiation have been ineffective,” Dr. Darlong said. “Although this technique is widely used in European centers, particularly in Germany, RGCIRC is proud to be the only hospital in Delhi offering this cutting-edge technology.”

To date, RGCIRC has successfully treated around 100 cases of lung metastasis using this laser technology. Dr. Darlong highlighted the procedure’s advantages over traditional surgeries, stating, "This innovative laser technique revolutionizes lung surgery by allowing us to precisely cut and seal tissue, preserving more healthy lung parenchyma compared to conventional stapler methods. Not only does it enhance recovery rates, but it also expands treatment options for patients, offering a more cost-effective solution."

This workshop serves as a pivotal step in training medical professionals and raising awareness about the benefits of laser technology in cancer treatment, setting new standards for oncological care.
