Ramaiah Memorial Hospital Launches State-of-the-Art Stroke Center on World Stroke Day
In a significant move to enhance stroke care in Karnataka, Ramaiah Memorial Hospital has inaugurated the Ramaiah Stroke Center, a cutting-edge, comprehensive, multi-disciplinary stroke management unit equipped with a Neurointensive Care Unit. The launch took place on October 29, coinciding with World Stroke Day, and was attended by key hospital officials, including Dr. SC Nagendra Swamy, President; Dr. Madan S. Gaekwad, Chief Operating Officer; Dr. Aruna D. Ramesh, HOD & Senior Consultant of the Department of Accident & Emergency; and Dr. Sunil V. Furtado, HOD & Senior Consultant of the Department of Neurosurgery.
Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in India, with an incidence rate of 138 per 100,000 people. Often referred to as a "brain attack," strokes can strike anyone at any time, and their impact varies based on severity and individual circumstances. Prompt treatment is critical, as reaching a hospital within the "Golden Hour"—4.5 hours after symptoms appear—can significantly improve outcomes.
Dr. SC Nagendra Swamy highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive stroke care in the region. “The rise in stroke incidence necessitates an immediate and long-term surveillance framework,” he stated. “Our new Ramaiah Stroke Center will provide round-the-clock care, ensuring every patient receives the necessary treatment to protect and restore their health.”
The Ramaiah Stroke Center aims to reduce mortality and disability through a specialized multidisciplinary approach, including timely diagnosis, medical and surgical interventions, rehabilitation, and secondary prevention. A dedicated six-bed Stroke ICU is available within the Neuro ICU, offering the highest standards of clinical care.
Dr. Aruna D. Ramesh emphasized the importance of the Stroke Code Protocol, which is activated when a patient is suspected of having a stroke. This protocol encompasses the “8 Ds” of stroke care: Detection, Dispatch, Delivery, Door, Diagnosis, Decision, Drug, and Disposition. “This structured approach ensures that from the moment symptoms are recognized, every step is taken to minimize damage and maximize recovery,” she explained.
The comprehensive nature of the Ramaiah Stroke Center includes advanced neurointerventions and neurosurgical procedures. Dr. Sunil V. Furtado underscored the critical role of emergency surgery for patients who are not candidates for clot-busting drugs. “In cases where a clot obstructs blood flow to the brain, our team is prepared to perform lifesaving procedures, restoring blood flow and improving recovery chances.”
Post-stroke care is equally important. Dr. Mahendra JV, HOD of the Neurology Department, discussed the rigorous clinical treatments and therapies provided in the dedicated Stroke ICU. “Our neurocritical care specialists and vascular neurologists work collaboratively to monitor and treat each patient, ensuring all functional impairments are addressed,” he said.
Another vital component of the stroke management strategy is the advanced Neuro Rehabilitation Unit. Dr. Partha Sarathi, Chief Consultant of Neuro Rehabilitation, highlighted that recovery timelines vary significantly among patients. “Our Neuro Rehabilitation Unit tailors physical, occupational, and speech therapy to each individual’s needs, supporting their journey back to normalcy,” he added.
Ramaiah Memorial Hospital is committed to providing exceptional care not only during hospitalization but also post-discharge, ensuring patients receive ongoing support to minimize the risk of recurrent strokes. The launch of the Ramaiah Stroke Center marks a significant advancement in stroke care in Karnataka, aiming to save lives and improve the quality of life for stroke survivors.
