Delhi-AIIMS Reports Sharp Increase in Diwali Firecracker Burns and Injuries
Delhi-AIIMS has witnessed a concerning rise in burn-related admissions following Diwali festivities, with 48 patients admitted due to firecracker and other fire-related injuries.
Among these, 19 patients required intensive care unit (ICU) support, and 11 are reported to be in very critical condition.
Age Breakdown and Critical Cases
The majority of ICU admissions are young adults, with 11 patients aged between 10 and 25, highlighting the heightened risk among this age group during festive celebrations. Three children under 10 years old and two senior patients above 60 are also receiving critical care. Additionally, 11 patients have been classified as very critical, with their conditions demanding specialized medical attention.
Firecracker-Related Burns Lead Admissions
Firecracker-related incidents are the primary cause, accounting for 32 cases. Among these, 22 patients are between 10 and 25 years old, with six cases involving children under 10 and four adults aged 25 to 60. Another six patients sustained burns from Diwali fire incidents not directly linked to firecrackers. Potash, a substance sometimes involved in the festivities, resulted in ten burn cases, primarily affecting patients aged 10 to 25.
Geographic and Injury Distribution
Of the 48 patients, 35 hail from Delhi, while eight are from the National Capital Region (NCR), including five from Gurgaon, and five patients arrived from outside NCR. Alarmingly, 11 cases involved burns or blasts affecting the eyes, and 19 cases involved injuries to the hands.
Healthcare Response and Awareness
These injuries emphasize the need for increased awareness regarding fire safety and cautious handling of fireworks. Local authorities and healthcare professionals continue to stress preventive measures and urge safer practices during celebrations.
