117 Patients Admitted for Diwali Burns at Safdarjung Hospital Amid Festivities

As Diwali celebrations unfolded, Safdarjung Hospital, home to the largest burn unit in India, recorded a significant influx of burn cases, treating a total of 117 patients related to fire-related injuries. While many patients suffered minor burns and were treated in the outpatient department (OPD), 15 individuals with major burns required hospitalization.

Out of the 117 cases, 89 involved children under the age of 12. A staggering 86 of the burn incidents were attributed to firecrackers, while 31 were due to diya (lamp) burns. Notably, five patients required surgical intervention for severe hand injuries caused by firecracker explosions.

The hospital's records detail the daily admissions for major burns over the Diwali period, showing 9 admissions on October 30, 2024, 15 on October 31, and 3 on November 1. The cumulative total of major burn cases for this period stands at 27.

On the day preceding Diwali, October 30, the hospital received 18 burn cases, with half requiring admission while the other half were treated on an outpatient basis for minor burns.

The demographic breakdown of the patients reveals a significant prevalence among males, with 82 male patients compared to 35 females. Additionally, the majority of cases originated from within Delhi, with 89 patients from the city, 23 from outside Delhi, and five from the National Capital Region (NCR).

These alarming statistics highlight the urgent need for increased awareness regarding fire safety and the risks associated with fireworks during Diwali. Healthcare officials are urging the public to exercise caution and adhere to safety guidelines to prevent similar incidents in the future.
