Fortis Doctor Saves Life at Delhi Half Marathon: A Powerful Reminder of CPR’s Importance

In the heart of the Delhi Half Marathon, amidst the rhythm of pounding feet and the drive to cross the finish line, an inspiring act of heroism unfolded—one that serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of preparedness in medical emergencies.

Dr. Ramit Wadhwa, Consultant of Non-Invasive Cardiology at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram, showcased not only his medical expertise but also his quick thinking when a fellow runner's life hung in the balance.

As the runners raced through Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, an unexpected moment gripped the crowd. A participant collapsed, and what could have been a tragedy became a testament to the power of timely action and medical knowledge.

"I saw a runner collapse about half a mile from the finish line," Dr. Wadhwa recalls. "A few others were trying to help him, but I knew immediate medical intervention was needed. Without thinking twice, I stopped my run and went over to him. The runner was dehydrated, disoriented, and his pulse was weak."

In those crucial moments, Dr. Wadhwa initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), a skill that, in this case, meant the difference between life and death. With the support of other runners, he managed to stabilize the man before an ambulance arrived. "We administered CPR, kept his airway open, and when the ambulance got there, we started IV fluids and supported his breathing with an Ambu bag and mask. By the time we reached the medical camp, he was regaining consciousness, though still a bit confused," Dr. Wadhwa explained.

This incident underscores the vital importance of CPR training—not just for healthcare professionals but for everyone. "In endurance events like marathons, preparation is key," Dr. Wadhwa emphasizes. "Training, hydration, and basic health checks like an ECG or stress test are important, especially for older athletes. But more than that, knowing how to perform CPR can save a life in those first critical moments."

Yash Rawat, Facility Director at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, who was also participating in the race, couldn't agree more. "I was running in the half marathon too, and this incident really drives home how essential it is to know CPR," Rawat says. "Fortis has always been proactive about raising public awareness around cardiac health and the importance of CPR training. What happened at the marathon shows how vital it is that more people become familiar with emergency procedures."

Through this event, Fortis Memorial Research Institute not only saved a life but also highlighted the urgent need for public education around life-saving skills. Dr. Wadhwa’s quick intervention reflects the core values of Fortis—care, compassion, and excellence—extending far beyond the walls of a hospital. His actions serve as a call to action for others to seek CPR certification, reminding us all how critical those first few minutes can be in saving a life.

As the Delhi Half Marathon came to a close that day, the finish line symbolized more than just a goal for runners—it became a poignant reminder that sometimes, the real victory lies in our ability to step up when it matters most.
