India's First 'Brain Pacemaker' Surgery Brings New Hope

India's Parkinson's disease patients now have new hope thanks to a revolutionary technique. A 72-year-old patient at Aster CMI Hospital became the first in India to receive the Percept RC, an advanced brain-sensing device, after his symptoms persisted despite many treatments. This milestone represents a substantial leap in Parkinson's treatment and has the potential to provide relief to many people suffering from the disease's devastating symptoms.

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) included implanting a neurostimulator device under the patient's skin and connecting it to electrodes placed in specific brain locations. These electrodes provide precise electrical pulses to treat motor symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, and slowness that Parkinson's sufferers frequently experience. DBS is a highly specialized surgical procedure that provides a viable alternative when drugs and other treatments fail to adequately manage symptoms.

The Percept RC, often known as a "pacemaker for the brain," continuously monitors the patient's brain activity, focusing primarily on beta oscillations linked with Parkinson's symptoms. By analyzing these patterns, the device may automatically modify its stimulation settings to provide a personalized therapeutic experience.

Dr. Nirmala S., consultant in neurosurgery at Aster CMI Hospital, emphasized the significance of this cutting-edge technology: "This device offers a personalized approach to deep brain stimulation therapy, adapting to the patient's changing needs." By continuously monitoring brain activity, we can fine-tune the stimulation, resulting in better outcomes and a higher quality of life for the patient. It's great to be the first in India to implant the entire circuit. The entire process lasted four hours, and the patient recovered nicely.

Mr. SGS Lakshmanan, the hospital's Chief Operating Officer, expressed his satisfaction with the procedure's success, emphasizing the joint effort required for such a specialized operation. "With the assistance of skilled doctors and cutting-edge technology available at the hospital, we successfully completed the surgery. "We are pleased to offer this advanced procedure to our patients," he stated.

Aster CMI Hospital continues to set the standard in modern medical treatments, reiterating its commitment to offering outstanding care and creative solutions to patients across India.
