Rape and Murder Trial at RG Kar Medical College Continues, Witnesses Testify
The trial regarding the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case entered its third day as an associate professor and a junior medic provided testimony in Sealdah court, as reported by local media outlets. The incident involves the reported rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College, which took place on August 9.
An associate professor, as outlined in the CBI chargesheet, conducted an examination of the trainee’s body, observing that her eyes were “half-open” with “pupils dilated and fixed.” In a swift response to the incident, the professor promptly notified Sandip Ghosh, the college's principal at the time, as well as the local police authorities. A junior doctor, following directives from the associate professor, placed a blanket over the victim’s body, according to the charge sheet.
The prosecution's case is bolstered by the inclusion of both doctors as key witnesses, contributing to a comprehensive witness list compiled by the CBI, which encompasses a total of 128 individuals. To date, six witnesses have taken the stand, among them the victim’s father, a former neighbourhood councillor, and four medical professionals. Sanjay Roy, the sole individual facing charges of rape and murder, attended the court proceedings, listening intently to the testimonies presented. We anticipate two additional witnesses taking the stand on Thursday as we resume the court proceedings.
According to sources from Presidency Jail, Roy requested chicken rolls and chow mein from the jail canteen, but they reportedly denied his request. The itchy wool blankets caused discomfort, prompting a request for cloth sheets as an alternative. However, this request went unfulfilled. Witnesses observed Roy making hand gestures to communicate during his court appearance. Witnesses also heard Roy express that they had not allowed him to speak.
Safety Concerns Emerge Following the Incident at RG Kar Medical College’s Surgery Department
On Thursday afternoon, a section of the false ceiling in the surgery department of RG Kar Medical College reportedly collapsed, as confirmed by local sources. An incident occurred in an operating theatre, which, fortunately, was unoccupied at the time, preventing any injuries from taking place.
The Public Works Department (PWD) is currently overseeing repair work on the hospital premises, including partial renovations in the surgery department, according to an anonymous hospital official. The ongoing renovation work at the site is believed to have triggered the recent collapse.
Students at RG Kar Medical College have voiced their frustration, citing inadequate maintenance practices as a significant concern. A student highlighted the prolonged disrepair of the operating theatre, noting that despite numerous complaints, the authorities have failed to take meaningful action. A student reported that the lack of individuals in the operating theatre during the incident prevented a significant accident, while numerous students argue that the ceiling collapse highlights persistent neglect in the facility.
Significant concerns regarding the management and maintenance protocols at RG Kar Medical College have arisen due to the ongoing trial in the RG Kar rape and murder case and the recent ceiling collapse. The recent incidents underscore the urgent necessity for heightened vigilance and the enhancement of safety standards in environments designed to protect lives and health.
