RGCIRC Hosts Neuro & Spine Onco Conference to Spotlight Advancements in Brain and Spine Tumor Care
The Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre (RGCIRC) recently held the second edition of its Neuro & Spine Onco conference, drawing approximately 200 neuro-oncology experts from across the nation to discuss the latest breakthroughs in the management of brain and spine tumors.
The event provided a collaborative platform to explore strategies for improving the technical feasibility, surgical safety, and overall effectiveness of treating cancers related to the central nervous system (CNS). It emphasized patient-centered care and advanced therapeutic options.
Dr. (Prof.) Ishwar Chandra Premsagar, Chief of Neuro & Spine Oncology Services at RGCIRC and the organizing chairman of the conference, highlighted the event’s importance in raising awareness about brain and spine tumors. "These vital organs control movement, speech, vision, and hearing. Tumors in these areas, if not managed appropriately, can cause lifelong disabilities," Dr. Premsagar stated. He also stressed the need for vigilance, noting that symptoms such as persistent headaches and seizures could signal brain tumors, which currently lack routine screening tests.
CyberKnife Takes Center Stage
The conference spotlighted the CyberKnife, a cutting-edge radiation therapy tool introduced by RGCIRC in 2023. This technology represents a leap forward in treating neuro and spine cancers, as well as tumors in other parts of the body.
“CyberKnife delivers highly focused radiation with robotic precision, targeting tumors from 360 degrees. This non-invasive approach ‘burns’ the tumor while sparing surrounding healthy tissue,” explained Dr. Premsagar. Unlike conventional radiation, CyberKnife's surgical precision ensures enhanced efficacy and reduced side effects.
Multidisciplinary Insights
The event featured a series of specialized sessions addressing key topics, including pediatric tumors, spine tumors, advancements in radiation therapy, and the integral roles of pathology and radiation in tumor management.
A diverse group of professionals—comprising neuro-oncology surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, neuropathologists, neuro-anesthetists, neuro-radiologists, and neuro-psychologists—delved into the latest innovations, surgical advancements, and multidisciplinary approaches to tumor care.
Driving Collaboration and Improved Patient Care
The conference served as a hub for knowledge sharing and collaboration, equipping healthcare professionals with cutting-edge tools and insights to enhance patient care. By fostering dialogue among experts, the event emphasized the importance of a team-based approach in managing complex CNS tumors.
Dr. Premsagar expressed hope that such initiatives would significantly improve the quality of life for patients battling brain and spine cancers. "This conference is a testament to RGCIRC's commitment to staying at the forefront of neuro-oncology advancements and delivering world-class care to patients," he said.
With an unwavering focus on innovation and patient outcomes, the Neuro & Spine Onco conference reaffirmed RGCIRC’s position as a leader in oncology care, offering renewed hope for those affected by some of the most challenging cancers.
