Amrita Hospital Doctors Successfully Performs Rare Scalp Replantation Surgery on 13-Year-Old Girl

Doctors at Amrita Hospital in Faridabad made a significant medical milestone by successfully completing a rare and challenging scalp replantation surgery on a 13-year-old girl. The life-saving operation, which lasted over eight hours, demonstrates advanced reconstructive microsurgery and collaborative medical expertise.

The adolescent girl, from Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, had a catastrophic entire scalp avulsion after her hair became entangled in the fan of a generator during a local fair. The accident caused her scalp to completely detach—a rare and serious ailment that necessitated rapid and specialized care.  Following early stabilization at a local hospital, the family sought specialized care at Amrita Hospital.

Dr. Sachin Gupta, Senior Consultant in Paediatric Neurosurgery, facilitated the referral and acknowledged the hospital's cutting-edge expertise. "By the time the patient reached us, nearly 10 hours had passed since the injury," the doctor added. "Despite the significant challenges posed by the delay, our team demonstrated exceptional resilience."

Dr. Mohit Sharma, Head of the Centre for Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, led the difficult treatment, which required reconnecting the scalp's small blood arteries, nerves, and tissues. The team used modern microvascular surgical techniques to precisely restore blood flow and nerve function.

"Total scalp avulsion is traumatic, both literally and emotionally." The success of replantation depends on timely intervention and microvascular expertise," Dr. Sharma stated. "Thanks to the interdisciplinary team, the patient's appearance has returned to near-normal levels. She has already returned to school and is leading a happy, regular life.

Dr. Niti Gulati Batra's coordination of the anaesthesiology team was crucial in maintaining the patient's stable haemodynamic condition throughout the surgery. Stability during surgery is crucial in many circumstances, as it serves as the foundation for effective outcomes.

If the procedure had failed, the woman would have needed skin grafts to cover her exposed skull, resulting in severe disfigurement. "This would have severely impacted her self-esteem and social interactions, especially at such a tender age," stated Dr. Vasundhra Jain, Senior Consultant in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. "The success of this surgery not only restored her physical appearance but also her confidence and quality of life."

The patient's parents were extremely grateful to the medical personnel. Her father commented, "We were devastated when the accident occurred." Visiting Amrita Hospital was the best decision we made. "The doctors gave our daughter a second chance in life."

Dr. Sanjeev Singh, the medical director of Amrita Hospital, emphasized the importance of this achievement.  "This surgery demonstrates Amrita Hospital's world-class infrastructure and expertise." It demonstrates our dedication to changing lives through modern medical treatment."

The patient's amazing recovery exemplifies the transformative power of modern medicine and multidisciplinary collaboration. This procedure not only restored a young girl's scalp, but also her hopes and dignity.
