Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission Expands Digital Health Ecosystem Across India
The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) is revolutionizing India’s healthcare sector by enabling interoperability of health data and creating comprehensive electronic health records for citizens. Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav, in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, highlighted the significant strides made under the initiative.
ABDM comprises several key registries, including the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA), the Healthcare Professional Registry (HPR), the Health Facility Registry (HFR), and the Drug Registry. As of February 6, 2025, an impressive 73.98 crore ABHA accounts have been created, covering 36 states and union territories, spanning 786 districts across the country. Additionally, 3,63,520 healthcare facilities have been registered under the HFR, while 5,64,851 healthcare professionals have enrolled in the HPR. Over 1.59 lakh health facilities are actively using ABDM-enabled software, and approximately 49.06 crore health records have been linked with ABHA.
The mission aims to bridge gaps in healthcare accessibility, particularly benefiting rural and remote areas. By facilitating seamless continuity of care across primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare, ABDM enhances service availability through technology-driven interventions like telemedicine. The initiative ensures that digital healthcare services are inclusive and user-friendly, addressing concerns related to digital literacy by offering multilingual support through platforms such as the ABHA app and Aarogya Setu.
To further extend its reach, ABDM provides assisted and offline registration modes in areas with limited internet connectivity or hardware resources. The government remains committed to strengthening the digital health infrastructure, making healthcare more efficient, accessible, and transparent for all citizens.
